Site Description: The Faculty develops around the Cloister designed by Giuliano da Sangallo, which represents one of the most important examples of the Renaissance architecture in Rome. The Cloister consists of a rectangular colonnade. Each side has seven or eight arches supported by columns with beautiful ionic capitals, which show the emblem of the Della Rovere family. In the center of the courtyard, a well with an elegant octagonal plan is placed. It was sculpted by Simone Mosca and surmounted by a simple easel composed by two couples of columns supporting a simple moulding architrave, credited to Michelangelo as well. Today it is the symbol of the Faculty.
The Cloister will be used for coffee breaks and as a networking zone. The atmosphere and the effects of light and shade created by these classical structures project an idea of harmony, and make this area a perfect place to sit and read, converse or relax. The Welcome Cocktail will be served in the Cloister too.
Conference sessions will be held in the rooms adjacent to the Cloister, most of them restored maintaining their original design and decoration. The Faculty developed in many more areas for a total of four main buildings and 50 rooms, 20 of them will be dedicated to URSI GASS2021.
The map at glance will be available shortly.
A Historical Glance: The Faculty was founded in 1817 by Pope Pius VII, following the model of the most famous Parisian and Viennese School of Engineering of the time. The ancient Faculty of Engineering has a long educational tradition which is appreciated all over the world. This rich experience has allowed the Faculty to offer a very innovative syllabus today that aims particularly at satisfying local engineering needs, yet also to prepare graduates for employment in an increasingly globalized and international job market. Recently, a more general internal reorganization of the University required a thematic splitting of the research and teaching activity, with the consequent born of the new Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, the headquarter of which remained in the pristine site, and of the new Faculty of Information Engineering, Informatics and Statistics.
With over 150 years of history, the three Faculties together currently offer over 30 programs and over 20 master courses, held in various buildings in the area of via Eudossiana, but also in other locations in Rome and Lazio, like the modern campuses in Latina and Rieti.
